Coach Pollard passes |

We regret to inform you of the passing of Henry "Hank" Pollard, former math teacher, basketball and tennis coach of Los Angeles High School. Hank Pollard passed away on Saturday May 19, 2012. Hank was a proud member of the mathematics department at Los Angeles High School until his retirement from teaching at LA High in 1978. As a tennis and basketball coach, he led the LA High Romans to numerous league titles and City play-offs. His tennis team captured the City championship in 1960 and 1961. In 2011 L.A. High School dedicated their newly resurfaced tennis courts with a plaque to honor Henry "Hank" Pollard for 30 years of teaching and coaching. An excellent athlete, Hank enjoyed sports, particularly playing tennis and golf, and watching USC football. Prior to being inducted into the military in 1943 and serving as a Lieutenant in the Army Air Force in Los Angeles, Hank taught math in Plainview and Kerrville, Texas. After World War II, he taught math and coached basketball and tennis at Los Angeles High School. He was recalled to active duty, and served as a Captain at Lackland Air Force Base from 1950 - 1952. He returned to Los Angeles High School for the remainder of his teaching career, and remained in the Air Force Reserves until 1971 when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
A celebration honoring his life will be held at 11 am on June 9, 2012 at La Canada Presbyterian Church, 626 Foothill Blvd., La Canada, CA, to be followed by a reception at his daughter's home.
